#OTD in 927 Constantine II of Scotland supposedly accepted the overlordship of Aethelstan of Wessex, as did Hywel Dda of Deheubarth, Ealdred of Bamburgh and King Owain of the Cumbrians.
I wonder if that and maybe its “fading vestiges” inform the Scottish kings, the Cumbrians, Westmorelanders, Skipton, Wath, Huntingdon etc - it is informed the Bruce, earl David etc across the generations and perhaps even found its way into the Arbroath document?
Thank you so much :) I had a look at the text of the Abroath document only recently - interestingly, several of the signatories tried to kill Bruce only a few months after it was issued.
Ah the Scots!! 😁😁
This is a wondrous post David.
The eloquence of the charter is almost sublime.
